Gresson Street Affray 100 years on

Back in Hong Kong, lovely winter weather here, and gearing up to commemorate the 100th anniversary of events that saw the massacre of police at Gresson Street in Wanchai. It would be lovely to get a 'blue plaque' or similar up in the street, but the little single-storey dim sum restaurant that now occupies the space where No. 6 (the fateful house) once stopd has little appearance of permanency itself. Never mind. I'm happy to alert you to two broadcasts on Hong Kong Heritage, Annemarie Evans' weekly exploration of the history of this wonderful place. This Saturday (13th January 2018) at 7.30 am (HK time) and repeated Sunday 14th Jan at 6.15 pm I'm talking about some of the stories from Policing Hong Kong an Irish History. (HK time being currently 8 hours ahead of GMT). The programmes are then available on permanent download. I'll put up a link as soon as available.

Next weekend, same programme, same time, I'm talking about the events in Gresson Street itself. We recorded that programme in amongst the market stalls, so expect background noise of trams, trolleys and haggling over fruit and orchid prices.

Next weekend - the Sunday edition of South China Morning Post magazine has a major article on the anniversary. Written by Stuart Heaver, one of HK's foremost journalists, it really captures the pace and chaos of the events that fateful January morning, when so many lives were lost. Again, it will be available online, and I'll post a link asap. But if your in the region do look out for it.
